A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE Continued
Celeste started offering grant writing classes in 2017 at the Mt. Pleasant NOW Development
Corporation. In the three years of providing this free class, over 400 people from across
Northeast Ohio have attended.
In 2019, she met at the Cleveland Leadership Center to discuss the needs of the
people of Puerto Rico following the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria. One of
the needs was for information about writing for and obtaining grants. While a trip
to Puerto Rico was planned for early 2020, the global pandemic put those plans
on hold. Instead, Celeste’s resilience led to the manual on grant
writing being digitally produced in English and Spanish, and widely
distributed.
To date, over 100 people have signed up for Zoom workshops
presented by Celeste and with the support of FEMA. The workshops help
the people of Puerto Rico to learn about what funders want–outcome,
impact, data, etc., to enhance their applications and improve their
chances of obtaining funding. Just like the Clevelanders who attend
Celeste’s grant writing class in Mt. Pleasant.
